Writer's Guidelines
Our Focus Golf Event, a quarterly national trade magazine, is the resource for golf outings and events. Golf Event provides readers with invaluable insight from industry experts, updates on products and services, destination spotlights, planning tools and much more. From the latest trends in golf to what's hot in food and beverage, Golf Event provides readers the tools to make their events successful. We want to offer specific ideas, tips and resources readers can use to take their events to the next level.
Our Readers Targeted to the golf event, outing and tournament industry, Golf Event readers are golf event managers, event planners, golf course professionals and club managers as well as those responsible for corporate or charity golf event. This encompasses both seasoned and beginner event planners, so each issue strives to deliver pertinent information to all readers. The debut issue was February/March 2006; controlled circulation is more than 6,000
Submissions We prefer queries rather than unsolicited manuscripts. Queries are best submitted via e-mail with no attachments. Queries allow us to review your article ideas and to suggest how to tailor them for our audience before you begin writing. Sample articles are available online at www.golfeventmagazine.com. Please allow six to eight weeks to review your proposal.
Articles The following are sections of the magazine open to freelance writers.
Departments are typically 700 to 900 words. Actual length will be discussed when assigned. Departments include:
- Tech Savvy - focused on all things technology. From GPS to WiFi to ways readers can use the web to organize and promote their outings, this department keeps readers abreast of technology and how it applies to golf events.
- Bunker - focused on event strategies and formats. Beyond the typical scramble, this department highlights, instructs and discusses formats and strategies readers can implement at their events.
- Destination Spotlight - focused on one course or resort. Each issue editors select a course or resort to highlight. Usually a longer word count than the other departments, this section includes a brief history and description of the venue plus any pertinent information specific to golf outings and events that readers need to know. Multiple sidebars are also included: contact info; special event options; awards and ratings; facility highlights.
- Tips From The Tee - a Q & A with an executive director or tournament chairman of a major golf tournament.
- 19th Hole - focused on food and beverage. This department covers food and beverage, a vital component of any event, from any and all angles.
Features are typically 1,200 to 1,700 words. Point of Difference feature stories (one in each issue) typically run longer, around 2,000 to 2,500 words and may include several sidebars. Actual length will be discussed when assigned. Topics for features vary widely but always with the readers' events success in mind--topics may include, but are not limited to, sponsorship sales; ways to attract players to your event; proper etiquette; gifts and awards; outsourcing; staffing and volunteers; event add-ons; and negotiating course contracts. Event profiles are always of interest and must include photos. We are particularly open to writers who can come up with a different angle on a common topic.
Note: Articles should not be about a single, specific product or company. Articles must be objective, offer advice that is broadly applicable and include information about competing products or services if applicable. Vendors who wish to submit a press release regarding new products should send information to the editor with the subject line: The Fairway. Items for this section are chosen at the discretion of the editor.
Formatting and Style When formatting your article, it should be 1.5 spaced and the font should be 10 point Arial. Submit the article as a Microsoft Word attachment. Submit art work, photos, charts, graphs, etc. with the finished article and include suggested captions with all photos.

Payment Payment for articles is offered only to professional freelance writers who are not employed by, or in any way connected to, an organization or company serving the golf outing and event industry. Articles are paid on a flat-fee basis. Rates vary based on assignment. A kill fee of 25% will be paid for assigned articles that are not accepted for publication.
Payment is made 30 days after acceptance. Invoices should be sent with your finished article and must include specifics about the title of the article and expected month of publication, Social Security number or Tax ID number and specific directions for how the check should be made out and to where it should be sent.
Misc. The editors reserve the right to edit all submissions for grammar, length and clarity. If your article is substantially revised, it will be sent to you for your review. Writers must sign a copyright agreement. After your article is printed you will receive two complimentary copies of the issue in which your article appears.
